Google grades every website on three things real visitors feel: how fast it loads, how quickly it responds, and whether it stays still while loading. Here is what those scores mean and how to fix them.
Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to score the real-world experience of visiting your website. They are not abstract developer metrics. Each one maps to something a customer actually feels: waiting for a page to show up, tapping a button and waiting for it to react, and watching the layout jump around as things load. Google rolls these into its ranking signals, so a site that scores poorly is harder to find and more frustrating to use. Here is the plain-English version.
LCP, Largest Contentful Paint, measures loading. It is the moment the main content of the page (usually the biggest image or headline) finishes appearing. If your visitor stares at a blank or half-loaded screen, LCP is the number describing that wait. Google wants this under 2.5 seconds.
INP, Interaction to Next Paint, measures responsiveness. When someone taps a button, opens a menu, or fills in a form, INP measures how long the page takes to visibly react. A laggy site that freezes for a beat after every tap scores badly here. Google wants this under 200 milliseconds. (INP replaced the older FID metric in 2024, so if you have read about "First Input Delay," this is its successor.)
CLS, Cumulative Layout Shift, measures visual stability. This is the annoying one: you go to tap a link and an image or ad finishes loading, shoves everything down, and you tap the wrong thing. CLS scores how much the page jumps around while it loads. Google wants this under 0.1.
Two reasons, and both cost you money. First, ranking. Core Web Vitals are part of how Google decides where your site lands in search results, especially on mobile. A slow, unstable site gets out-ranked by faster competitors, so fewer people ever find you. Second, conversions. Even visitors who do reach a slow page leave: studies consistently show that every extra second of load time drops the share of people who stick around. For a local business, a slow site is the same as a salesperson who takes forever to answer the door. Most customers just go next door.
The common culprits are predictable. Oversized images that were never compressed are the number-one cause of slow LCP. Too much JavaScript, often from page builders, plugins, and third-party widgets, blocks the page from responding and hurts INP. Images and ads without reserved space cause the layout shifts that wreck CLS. And underneath all of it, slow hosting means the server itself is sluggish to respond before any of the above even starts.
